I cannot believe Chris has gone. Such a sweet kid and young man. He had such a great smile and his hugs were the best. He always told me how lucky my kids were to have their dad and I. I loved his hairstyles he created for me too.

How I wish I had known how bad he felt...I would have wanted to help if I could.

Chris Shmidt was a great many things to a great many people. But for me, he will always be the one to have given me my big break. Back in 2007, I was taking a year to work after high school, and ready my portfolio for one of the most reputable programs in the fashion industry at Ryerson University. I was spending a lengthy afternoon in Chris’ chair, and we spoke about our respective passions. He off-handedly suggested putting on a charitable fashion show together – a long-time dream of his. With no experience, I was shocked that someone like Chris would want to work with me. His faith in me lit a fire – and together we put on ‘Runway for Hope’ in the Stratford Festival Marquee, to a full house. In addition to fundraising for a great cause, Chris fostered a great deal of my own self-confidence. I was able to list him as a reference in my application to Ryerson, and wrote at length at my experience with him in our endeavor. In July of 2008, I was accepted to Fashion Communication at Ryerson. No one was more ecstatic than Chris. 3 years later, I was Communications Director for North America’s largest student-run fashion show, Mass Exodus. Again, I listed my work alongside Chris as an invaluable experience in my application for the position. There isn’t a doubt in my mind that this was a large contributing factor to my success on the project. The last time I saw Chris in downtown Stratford was in August of this past summer. He gave me a huge hug, and spoke of his plans to move to Toronto. And we promised to look one another up in the city. I’m incredibly thankful to Chris. And I’m not sure I was ever fully able to express my gratitude to him helping me launch myself into a notoriously tight-knit industry. I can only hope he knew the contribution he made in helping me get to where I am today. And that I’ll never forget his endless generosity, and unfailingly trusting heart. Thank you, Chris.
